Massive Battery Rebates Just Announced: Here’s What You Need to Know

If you’ve been thinking about adding a battery to your solar system, now is the perfect time to do it.

The Federal Government has just announced the Cheaper Home Batteries Program, which will slash the upfront cost of solar batteries by up to 30%, making battery storage more accessible than ever before for Aussie households and businesses.

What are the details on the new rebate?

This new rebate, part of a $2.3 billion funding commitment from the Labor Government, will provide a direct discount of $370 per kWh on eligible solar battery systems, cutting up to $4,000 off an average 11.5kWh home battery.

Here’s a quick breakdown:

  • Minimum battery size: 5kWh, eligible for a $1,850 rebate
  • Maximum rebate: $18,500 (based on 50kWh; larger batteries are still eligible, just capped at 50kWh)
  • Applies to new or existing rooftop solar systems
  • Must be Virtual Power Plant (VPP) ready
  • Installations must be completed by an accredited installer (like iinergy)
  • Both on-grid and off-grid systems are eligible
  • Can be stacked with state-based battery incentives

Timing matters

The rebate will be available from 1 July 2025, but the program is backdated to 6 April 2025. That means if you install your battery system now, you can still receive the discount. You just need to wait until after July 1 for your battery to be commissioned (turned on). Many installers, including us here at iinergy, can handle this process for you.

Already have a battery?

Even if you already have a solar battery, you’re still eligible to claim a rebate on an additional battery, but only one rebate per household applies.

Why it’s a big deal

This is the most significant government support for battery storage since the original solar rebate boom in 2011. It’s aimed at making solar energy more usable, giving households the ability to store and use their solar power whenever they need it, day or night.

It also means greater energy independence and big savings on your power bills. Take advantage of this incredible rebate and start slashing your power bills.

Should you wait or act now?

There’s no need to delay your battery install. In fact, acting now could put you ahead of the rush. Here are you few reasons you should book in a solar battery installation right away:

  • Lock in your system at today’s prices before demand drives them up
  • Reserve your place in the rebate scheme
  • We can install your system now and commission it after July 1 to secure your rebate

With demand set to surge, especially in Brisbane and SEQ, it makes sense to get in early and secure your installation date before the industry gets flooded and your installation timeline gets pushed back.
